An Overview

Did you know that snoring is recognised as a symptom of having a breathing disorder? In children, breathing disorders are linked to TMJ (jaw joint) problems, restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, teeth grinding, hyperactivity, bedwetting, and more. Adults with breathing disorders also have a higher risk of fatigue, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, and the list goes on.

Myosa® offers treatment for a range of symptoms relating to breathing and TMJ disorders in both children and adults. Treatment involves wearing simple, comfortable and highly effective removable appliances that provide symptom relief while addressing the underlying contributors to breathing disorders and jaw joint pain.

Myosa® treatment offers a range of benefits including:

  • Improved strength of the tongue, lip and throat muscles
  • Retraining from mouth to nasal breathing
  • Alleviated muscle tension and headache symptoms
  • Immediate symptom relief of TMJ (jaw joint) pain
  • Improved quality of sleep, and much more

The Causes of Jaw and Sleep Problems

Your nose is perfectly optimised for breathing as it warms, humidifies and purifies the air you breathe. During nasal breathing, the lip muscles are sealed yet relaxed. The tongue rests against the roof of the mouth where the pressure of it drives development of the upper jaw. This tongue positioning also allows you to swallow correctly, while maintaining balanced lip and cheek behaviour. Incorrect function creates a domino effect that then leads to a range of issues.

Mouth breathing causes the tongue to drop away from the roof of the mouth and the tongue to become weak. This weakened tongue can then fall into and block the airway throughout the night, which leads to snoring and other sleep-related breathing symptoms that may worsen over time. An incorrect swallow also develops as compensation for this abnormal tongue positioning with the lips, cheeks and tongue all continually pushing against the teeth and jaws, causing damage to the jaw joints over time with each swallow.

Though common, mouth breathing is actually medically recognised as a form of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder (SRBD). TMJ (jaw joint) and breathing disorders are interrelated chronic health problems that affect countless people worldwide, many of whom continue to suffer undiagnosed and untreated. Traditional approaches to TMJ and airway issues only address the symptoms, while doing little to treat the underlying contributors.

How Treatment Works

Myosa® not only provides symptom relief for a range of breathing and airway related disorders, such as snoring and jaw joint problems, but focuses primarily on addressing the underlying causes, allowing for more long-term treatment outcomes. Treatment involves using a series of removable oral appliances that are generally worn for just one hour each day and overnight while sleeping.

Myosa® appliances work by opening the bite and bringing the lower jaw forward into the correct position, effectively opening the airway while awake and asleep. They also help to correct poor muscle habits, tongue position and transition the patient from mouth to nasal breathing. In addition, patients undergo a specialised breathing and oral exercise program known as the Myosa®Activities. Taught by our friendly team of educators, the activities are fun to do, easy to follow and promote long-lasting habitual changes.

When to Start Treatment

Children as young as three years of age can be treated with Myosa®. Treatment should commence as soon as problems are detected to help avoid more severe health risks later in life as developmental and other issues caused by mouth breathing worsens over time. While treatment is crucial in childhood, Myosa® treatment for adults of all ages still provides numerous benefits and relief for those suffering with breathing, sleep and jaw joint dysfunctions.
